As I was playing around at www.MSN.com I randomly searched for ”sdsdf“.  I like to check out weird keywords like that just to see what the search engines are doing with non-competitive keywords.  Let me tell you I am glad I did that this time.  Read the rest of this entry »

I recently visited some friends of mine who live in the country on a converted farm.  It was nice getting out of the city for a few days.  More impressive is that this city boy didn’t get killed while being out in the wild.  Yes, I mean wild.  My friend took me for a walk in their woods and told me to carry the “trouble stick” since he was holding the leash for their 100 pound boxer dog.  I ask what the “trouble stick” is for he said in case the coyotes get too close again.  EXCUSE ME! What do you mean again?  Back to the issue at hand.  Read the rest of this entry »

Why not give a gift to the search engines?  Its because of the search engines that many of us make a living so why not give a little back and say thanks.  Here are some gift giving ideas for the search engine people: Read the rest of this entry »

Roll Call

Spoketh by Greg Niland in Personal

As many of you know GoodROI is located in Manhattan, New York because the tax rates are just so affordable .  As I was talking with people at Pubcon I found there were quite a few people that were also located in or around NYC that I was unaware of.

I am holding a Roll Call for all geeks that are in or around New York City.  I already know about Barry aka Rustybrick, Michael Gray aka Graywolf and Todd aka Stuntdubl.  Who else is out there.

If you are not in the New York area, than I feel sorry for you.  New York is great.  Where else can you order Pizza, Chinese, Thai, Italian, French and many other foods and get it delivered to your computer 24 hours a day.  I’ve been told New York also some cultural benefits.  With all of those take-away food options doesn’t it just make you want to move to New York right now :) .

Last night I was working on a project at 1am and I decided it was time to get some sleep and start fresh in the morning.  To ensure a fast start in the morning I left open a connection with a trusted source so a program could continue to run.  This will be known as mistake #1.

I wake up and my personal computer is showing the blue screen of death.  If you do not know what the blue screen of death is, it is when your computer is fried so bad it cant even run windows anymore or show a pretty error message.  It shows the most basic blue screen that says in nice words “this computer is ready to be melted down for recycling and has already started melting inside” Read the rest of this entry »

Back from Vegas Pubcon

Spoketh by Greg Niland in Conferences

I’m sorta a bit late finally posting that I’m back from Vegas Pubcon.  But what a trip it was.  I had a great time meeting alot of new people and also able to spend time with some old friends.

I also met some new faces from Google.  I think someone is spreading rumors about me because the two new Google engineers (at least they were new to me) that I met gave me the coldest of conversations.  Ok maybe I shouldn’t have offered to help better explain their algo to them (that was a bit rude) but I was just having fun and the other Google employee that was with us laughed.  And I even helped a nice lady that was having a problem figuring out why her UK clients website is no longer getting any UK traffic after she 301′d it to a .com and moved the hosting to an American company. I am having a great Friday morning.  I am truly giggling myself to death.  Why you ask?  Well because I did the right thing and was a nice guy and showed someone how 35,000 of their backlinks were accidentally misplaced.  I could have ignored it but I decided to pass it on as free advice besides I found it very funny that a mistake this big would not have been caught by themselves.
